Realised that my last movie post was way back in 2008. But considering that my last post was back in December, it seems this blog is on suffering from my lack of interest again. It’s just that I’ve been really busy (watching TV and eating) and blogging is really the last thing I want to do. But at the same time, I don’t really want to close this down, so here I am again. It’s going to be tough trying to play catch up, yet again. In any case, I think trying to blog in Japanese is becoming pointless, seeing that I’m no longer actively studying the language, and it will add to the backlog…

So, my come-back movie post is… Hanamizuki ハナミズキ

This movie was released in August last year (2010). The title is from a song of the same title by Hitoto Yo (一青 窈) which was released back in 2004. The tag line is 君と好きな人が 百年続きますように, which has been translated for the movie as May your love bloom a hundred year.

Cast
Aragaki Yui
Ikuta Toma

The movie is directed by Nobuhiro_Doi who also directed Nada Sousou, as well as a few other TV dramas that I like.

The movie takes place in Hokkaido, Tokyo, New York and Nova Scotia, Canada. Aragaki Yui’s character Sae, from a village in Hokkaido, is a senior high school student on her way to take an important examination which will give her a recommendation into Waseda University in Tokyo. The train she is in was stopped because of a collision with a deer. On the same train is Ikuta Toma’s Kohei, a student at a fishery school. Smitten by Sae, Kohei decided to help Sae get to that all-important exam by “borrowing” a neighbour’s pick-up. Only thing is Kohei only has a temporary learner’s permit and he ends up crashing the pick-up and Sae misses the examinations and her chance of getting into Waseda. From this chance encounter, a friendship develops between the two unlikely teens: one, a studious goody-goody student, the other an earthy fisherman-in-training.

I don’t quite get quite get how Kohei came to be helping Sae and I felt that perhaps some kind of back story might have made an impact. Or if it were to be a chance meeting, then it should be really chance. Rather than to have Kohei semi-stalk Sae on the train before offering to help her get to her destination.

With Kohei’s encouragement, Sae decides to sit for the entrance exams on her own merits as it was her dream to go to university in Tokyo. Kohei takes on a part-time job in town to take the train home with her after her cram school class. Tension builds as Sae feels the pressure of the exams coming while for Kohei has conflicted feelings about Sae passing the exams. Somehow, you feel that this relationship is doomed from the start as Sae wants to leave the small town, whereas Kohei seems happy to stay as a fisherman, as his father and grandfather before him were.

The inevitable happens – Sae passes her entrance exams and leaves for Waseda University in Tokyo. Will their relationship survive the distance? It almost didn’t survive the first Christmas. Kohei had travelled all the way south to spend Christmas with Sae, but was filled with jealousy when he saw Sae with a senpei (Junichi, an aspiring photojournalist who also introduced Sae to part-time teaching). However, they managed to affirm their affections for each other, and Kohei gave Sae a hand-made wooden boat for Christmas before returning to Hokkaido.

Things weren’t looking so good for Kohei. His father had to sell off their fishing boat and had advised Kohei to go follow his own dreams. Kohei thinks of joining Sae in Tokyo, but Sae hesitating, didn’t give a definite answer. She was having her own problems, unable to secure a job despite her graduation looming. But before long, tragedy strikes. On their final fishing trip, Kohei’s father collapses from a heart attack and dies, leaving Kohei to carry the family debts. Over the phone, Kohei tells Sae that he shouldn’t have said that he was leaving behind fishing, the ocean. And with that, the unlikely couple is no longer.

This thing about Christmas Eve in Japan, it’s actually like Valentine’s Day for us. Couples spend it together, it’s a big thing. So, for Kohei to travel all that way to be with Sae, you can imagine how he feels when he saw Sae with another guy. He probably feels inferior, as he’s like the country bumpkin whereas the other guy is another uni undergrad. As for the part about Sae being unable to secure a job in her final of study, it might seem crazy to most people. I mean the girl is still in school and you expect her to already have job offers? But that’s how it works in Japan. When I was there, most of my final year students were busy in their final year going to job interviews. It’s like that is actually their interview-going year. They hardly attend class. And if you don’t secure a job before graduation, it’s like you are in real trouble.

Fast forward a couple of years. Sae has graduated and is working in New York. She returns for her best friend’s wedding. She meets Kohei at the wedding, but he is already married to someone else. A local girl who has always had a crush on him. You can’t blame the missus for being jealous when she sees the way Kohei and Sae were talking. There was real chemistry there. Anyway, Kohei meets Sae again by chance at the Light House where they had shared their first kiss. It was where Sae had shared about her birthplace – somewhere in Nova Scotia in Canada. Sae has the boat that Kohei had made for her many years ago. She’s bringing it to New York as she doesn’t thing she will return to Japan. She will be getting married – to Junichi senpei. As Kohei sends Sae home, you can feel that they still have feelings for each other. But it’s not meant to be.

Kohei returns to a hysterical wife and you think she is just being a raving jealous lunatic, but it is revealed that while Kohei was out reminiscing the past with his first love, the Fishing Cooperative has decided not to extend his loan, meaning he is now a bankrupt. He returns after completing the bankruptcy forms to an empty home – his wife has decided to divorce him. Meanwhile, Junichi senpei was killed on assignment. Which means the two are free to re-unite.

Which they almost, in Canada. After Junichi’s death, Sae had some kind of crisis of identity and decides to travel to Canada, where she was born. When she was there, she chances upon a boat in a shop. It was the same boat that Kohei had made for her (she had left it in Kohei’s pickup truck that night). She runs to the pier, but is too late. Kohei’s tuna fishing trawler had already left. Are they never fated to be together?

Sae returns to Hokkaido, to her home. She is teaching children English, I think. She is reading them the Three Little Pigs, so I think she’s become like an English teacher. As she walks out, Kohei is in her yard, near to that Dogwood (Mizuki of the title) tree that her father had planted before dying of cancer. He holds that boat he had given her in his hand. Turning the flag with the “Kanbatte Sae” sign, there is a “Thank You” note, written by Sae, in Canada (inferred). So this is their love that will blossom a hundred years.

Overall, I like the show, probably because I like the 2 actors as well as the director. While watching, I can’t help but feel that it reminds me of The Notebook. There are some places where I felt that there was some glossing over, but I think that it was inevitable or it would have stretched the movie unnecessarily long. Also, initially, I felt that I would have preferred Kohei not to have married that girl who had a crush on him, but in the end, I think it adds up nicely. It would have been unrealistic for him to be single.

The music played a big part in creating the mood. Kudos to 一青 窈 for both songs. She’s now on my watch list.

At the end of Episode 2, Risa looks for Kengo with the marriage form. At the start of Episode 3, we see the both of them going to the municipal office (or wherever they are suppose to go), to complete the whole process to make the marriage official. Outside, Kengo passes the money to Risa as part of his bargain in the contract.

With the money, Risa goes back to her boss and pays back her debts. The boss asks her if sh’se finally decided to act in a film. I’m guessing that it’s some kind of A-film. Risa’s answer is typical Risa. With a half-laugh, she says that she’s playing someone’s wife, to which the boss remarked that she doesn’t have the looks of one.

Risa returns to the Okada house and returns the keys to Kengo’s mom. She announces that she is now “Okada Risa”. The significance of that wasn’t lost on mom. That night, they have dinner at the dining table, quite like a normal family. Mom reminds Risa that she should take care of her body for the transplant, meaning no alcohol. They also talk about some of the things that Risa will have to go through before the surgery, such as the compatibility test and an interview. Mom wonders if Risa is able to portray the image of the wife to the interview committee, to which Risa replies that it’s part of her job to create images. She seems a little surprised that Mom is not aware of her previous job and looks questioningly at Kengo, who avoids the issue by asking for salad dressing. Typical guy.

Meanwhile, Risa’s baddie brother (I think just giving him nicknames is more fun than trying to remember his name), is frantically searching for Risa, his golden goose, or should I say gold-laying goose. He is actually a smart guy, as from just an entrance ticket to the aquarium, he was able to connect the dots and find out the whereabouts of Risa, among other things.

From baddie bro, we switch back to Kengo and Risa. In preparation of the interview, they, together with mom have gone on an excursion. Mom tries her best to put everyone at ease. She even excuses herself so that the two of them could go shopping and for dinner alone. Unfortunately, they ran into the Kawamotos, and had to go for dinner with them. Risa helped Kengo out by telling them that she is a cousin staying at Kengo’s place temporarily. The shock of the evening wasn’t the Kawamotos when they found out that Risa is staying at Kengo’s. It is Risa’s revelation that Kengo had had a fiancée.

Back home, Risa uses the hair dye she has bought when out shopping with Kengo. As she messes up the floor with the dye, Kengo gives her a helping hand. They look like a happy couple with Kengo telling another of his stories, this time about dolphins, while Risa half-listens, half-sleeps.

The next day, at the hospital, all goes well at the interview with Dr Kamiya. But it doesn’t last… baddie brother has found Kengo. He tries to dig some information from Kengo, about his relationship with his sister. Luckily, Kengo is not that easily taken in by him.

Over at the Okada house, it’s food again! Kengo leaves for the hospital, leaving Risa and Okada-mama at home. The two seem to get on pretty well. Either Risa can really appreciate her cooking, or she just has a very good appetite. She’s always asking for seconds. Anyway, she goes into Kengo’s room and chances upon a photo of Kengo with Minako.

At the hospital, Kengo finds Maria at the roof top. They have a chat about meteors and Maria wishes, but no shooting star, for good health for Ryota. Then, Maria asks Kengo what if like Ryota, she needs a transplant? You could just see the look of horror inside Kengo, not knowing how to answer that. But Maria saved him the answer by joking about knowing a curse for the ripper.

Well, Maria need not worry as her brother has planned things well. The results of the compatibility test was positive; Risa can be a donor. However, since this is only episode 3, you know that all is not to be. And sure enough, it wasn’t. On his rounds, Dr Kamiya found out, from Maria, that the person that Kengo was supposed to be engaged to is called Minako. That is serious cause for worry for him

Comments
I like how the character of Ryota acts as a foil to Maria. While not the complete opposite, he helps her to evaluate her own position, her own values. And Ryota is also sort of a teacher for Maria. Everything she needs to know about her illness comes from Ryota. That I think is very clever use of plot device. From looking at all the Ryota goes through, Maria is learning more about her illness, about what her future may hold.

I think Takenouchi outdid himself in this episode. Could really feel his emotions as he sits there, waiting for the verdict from Dr Kamiya, about the results of the compatibility test. The look of relieve was genuine, believable

From the way Risa looks at Kengo in the above scene, you get a feeling that she is envious of the relationship that he has with his sister. It is in direct contrast with hers with baddie brother. Can’t really tell how Risa feels when she saw the photo of Kengo and Minako. Does she have feelings for Kengo? What kind of feelings?

Episode 2 picks up where we left off in Episode 1, near the train tracks where Kengo has just asked Risa to become part of his family. Risa thinks that he is mad and walks off. Then, suddenly, she stops. I will give you my liver, she says. But her debt is 3 million yen. Will Kengo pay it off? Kengo agrees readily. Then, Risa says, I will stay at your place tonight.

“I will give you my liver.” Risa washing away her past.

Risa follows Kengo back to his place. She seems impressed by his house. I mean her apartment is a 1K place – Just a 6 tatami-mat place (maybe smaller?) with a small kitchen (enough for the sink and fridge) near the front door. In comparison, his place is like a palace. There’s a driveway and a proper dinning area. Risa takes a bath in the ofuro. It’s as if she’s trying to wash away her past, her job, her brother.

After the bath, Risa passes by Kengo’s room and enters. It seems Kengo is really into jellyfish. He has a couple of tanks full of the floating creatures. Kengo tells Risa more of the transplant surgery and the deal he wants to strike with her. Basically, Risa will get the 3 million yen to pay her debts when she puts her name on the marriage certificate. Once the marriage has been approved by the authorities, they will be able to submit her as a possible donor for Maria. The hospital will conduct compatibility tests to see if they can do the transplant.

“What a gambler you are.” “I will still keep the 3 million yen.”

When Risa heard this, she immediately replies that she will still keep the money even if the test proved that she is not a suitable donor. Kengo seemed a bit taken aback, like that thought has never crossed his mind, that Risa might not be a suitable donor. But he agrees to the condition. “What a gambler you are,” Risa tells him. To which he replies, there is no one else but you I can depend on.

What about after the surgery? “Divorce,” says Kengo. Of course, says Risa. But I want another 1 million after the surgery. Sure, Kengo agrees. And they shake hands to seal the deal.

“The deal is on.”

The next day, we see Risa being called away by work again as she was having breakfast. She seems to enjoy the cooking of mom and they have a cordial relationship. Before going to work, she drops by the aquarium to look for Kengo, causing his colleagues to speculate on their relationship.

Asking for money, she promised to return after work. She also took his house keys and gave him her contact number.

Arriving at work, she soon realizes that the person who has requested for her is none other than sleazy brother. He makes a few suggestive remarks about her in sailor uniform, and how they are siblings and should take care of each other. Shrugging off his hands on her shoulders and denying their sibling relationship, Risa screams for the boss, accusing her brother of molest. Next, we see Brother being beaten to a pulp by Boss’ men, serve him right.

“It’s been a long time seeing you in a sailor uniform.” Sleazy brother getting beaten to a a pulp.

On the other hand, Kengo has been invited to dinner at the home of his concerned colleague, Kawamoto-senpai, who has also invited Minako. We learn more of Kengo’s relationship with Minako and this senpai, and understand why he feels the need to go on his knees to apologise to Kawamoto-senpai when he announces that the wedding is off, that they have broken up. He gives them no reason, leaving them to speculate.

Outside the apartment of the senpai, Kengo and Minako bid farewell. Minako asks Kengo if it’s okay to cancel the reservation of wedding hall. Kengo says yes and leaves.

Kengo apologising to sen-pai for calling off the wedding. Minako, “Shall I cancel the reservation with the wedding hall?”

While all these are going on, Maria is also having some action of her own – a forbidden excursion to Asakusa to watch rukugo with a fellow patient and her good friend. Unfortunately, the outing turned bad when the fellow patient, Ryota, started turning green and had to be rushed back to the hospital. Maria soon realized that her illness is the same as Ryota’s as they are on the same medication. The seriousness of her condition hits home.

Maria and friends at the rakugo. Risa and brother getting “cosy”.

Talking about hitting home, someone has also hit home. It’s none other than Risa’s brother. Kengo, concerned because Risa has not been coming home, goes looking for her, at her work place and her apartment. And inevitably meets Risa’s brother. Risa, returning in the nick of time, chases him away as she doesn’t want them to meet. She cooks a meal for her brother, and the next day, she packs her stuff while brother is sleeping and leaves.

Meeting Kengo at the aquarium, she hands him the marriage certificate for him to fill in his portion. Kengo hesitates. Is it okay, he asks. Why are you asking this me now? You shouldn’t be asking me this now. Why did you save me? I can’t go back now. Just like you, there’s no-one else but you I can turn to.

“I have no one else except you.”

Comments
Kengo is indeed at his wits end. That is why this drastic move, an illegal one. I guess from his point of view, since Risa is going to die anyway, because of her suicide attempt, why waste a good liver that can save his sister. The thing is, I don’t think that was his thought when he tried to save her. His intentions, initially was just to save her from the impending train. It was only during the struggle that he recognized who she was. And later that he hatched this desperate plan.

Kengo doesn’t know how to turn on his infra-red to transfer phone details.

I found a rare comic moment when Risa wanted to transfer her cell phone details to Kengo. He took a long time trying to set it up for the transfer that Risa decided that it would be faster to just take it and do it herself. It shows the generation or perhaps even cultural gap between the two. How unsuitable the two are for each other, what more to say for marriage. Yet, fate is bringing them together for just that.

As for Risa’s relationship with her brother, it is something that I still can’t figure out. She gets people to beat him up, yet still cooks for him. There is a hint of something bordering illicitness in the innuendos that Brother Shuichi is making, yet, she is willing to pay for his debts. She allows him to sleep on her bed. Are they really siblings? They do share the same surname. It is a mystery, their relationship. Especially since Risa keeps insisting to Kengo that she has no next of kin.

Talking about relationships, there’s the one between Kengo and Minako. When Minako asked Kengo if it’s okay to cancel the wedding hall reservation, you get a feeling that she hopes that he would say no. She is perhaps still hopeful that they might go ahead with the wedding. But I guess from Kengo’s point of view, the most important thing at that moment is saving his sister, and he cannot afford the emotional entanglements of a messy break up. Also, I think as a guy, it’s easier for him to put in down, perhaps? So he doesn’t really initiate the break up. He just allows Minako to make her own inference. Could it also be that he is hoping that after the surgery and divorce, he can get back with Minako?

I like the ending when Risa tells Kengo that besides him, she has no one else. Yes, she is doing it for the money. But at the same time, getting into this marriage contract with Kengo is also a way out for her. A chance at a new life. One where she gets to “choose” her family. Thus, Kengo’s initial question at the train tracks was an appropriate one. She has lived there with Kengo and his mom, and she has decided that yes, she can be a part of this family. There’s no turning back for her.

This show is turning out to be a very good drama. In just two days, I have watched 5 episodes. Just couldn’t stop myself. I see so many parallels in terms of the relationships, like metaphors of each other. Really like what the script writers are doing here. It left me thinking alot. Of the relationships, of the juxtapositioning again. It is one of the few dramas that I felt this compelled to write about. So have decided to do episode recaps. So that I can summarise and comment. To give my two cents worth.

The drama starts with the sound of bells that signals the gates closing for the trains. It’s a familiar sound, one that I kind of miss actually, but that’s not the story here. Anyway, we see the close up of Risa’s (Ueto) tear-streaked face. She is standing on the tracks and the train is coming towards her. Sad to say, I think for a lot of Japanese, that’s their way of getting out of an unsolvable situation – suicide by train. Her face shows the calmness of someone who has already made up her mind.

Tear-streaked Risa waiting for the train to knock her when suddenly a man dashes out to save her.

Suddenly, someone dashes across the tracks and tries to pull her away. She remains on the tracks, refusing to be pulled to safety. As the two struggle, Risa turns and faces the man (Takenouchi’s Kengo) who is trying to pull her away. They seem to recognize each other. Then, opening title.

Next scene is a month ago. We see Kengo on a bicycle, commuting to work at the aquarium. He seems to get on well with his colleagues. And his younger sister, Maria, as well, as we see that she is present at the wedding dress boutique where Kengo and his fiancée, Minako, are choosing a wedding dress. Just outside the boutique, we see Risa sitting. She is later joined by her boyfriend. They go for a bite where Boyfriend (don’t remember his name) invites her to his hometown in Kobe. He seems happy that she’s agreed, but she gets called away by work.

Inside the shop, Kengo is helping fiancee Minako select a wedding dress. Outside, Risa meets up with Boyfriend.

Work is something seedy in a sleazy place. I’m guessing that she is in the sex trade, although in this particular case, she is only giving the old baldy man a back massage. She is not happy working here (but who would be?), but is staying because she has taken a loan from the owner.

Risa giving a stressed-out baldy man a back message. At home another sleazebag in the form of her brother awaits her return.

Talking about seedy and sleazy, a sleazebag is waiting for her at home – her brother (starring the less known member of SMAP, Inagaki). The way he talks to her and the physical contact hints at something incestuous. Well, it seems, brother owes loan-sharks money and has searched high and low for Risa to “borrow” money. Not the first time it seemed. Risa has had enough. She runs out of the house and ends up at the aquarium where Kengo is working. They meet when it is time to close the aquarium and Kengo tells her some facts about jellyfishes, like how they dissolve into the sea when they die.

Kengo and Risa talking about jellyfish anatomy. Kengo and mom discussing Maria’s health with cutie Dr Kamiya.

Speaking of death, it is waiting ominously at the doorsteps of Maria’s house. After fainting in school, she was hospitalized and we soon learn that she has liver disease and is waiting for a suitable donor. Her doctor, Matsuda’s Dr Kamiya (isn’t he a bit too young and cute to be a specialist doctor??), tells Kengo and mum that Maria’s butin count is high and that putting her on the waiting list for a cavader liver transplant might take a long time. It would be better to find a suitable donor from family members. Kengo and mum volunteers, but unfortunately, both were found to be unsuitable, and none of the extended family members are willing to take the risk. Dr throws them a lifeline – family members include in-laws, meaning that Kengo’s wife would also be considered a possible live donor. This rule is to prevent the possibility of the poor selling their organs. I think this law is common in many countries. Anyway, mum goes on her knees and begs fiancée Minako. The shocked Minako asks for more time to think about it.

Mom begging Minako to donate her liver. Kengo and Risa meets again.

Kengo and Risa meets again, outside the aquarium. She is drunk and begs Kengo to allow her into the aquarium. They go to the jellyfish tank. Kengo talks to her about marine biology, but seems to be able to sense that something is troubling her.

Some time has past and Minako has had the chance to think about it, and unfortunately, she’s not going to do it – donate her liver to her future sister-in-law. Her reason – her parents are against it. I guess she is also not that willing herself. Kengo doesn’t come right out and break up with her, but it’s obvious the wedding is not going to take place.

Minako apologizing for not being able to donate her liver. Risa attempts to murder sleazy brother.

And it’s back to Risa’s apartment again where her brother is waiting for her again. Risa is sick of it, having to pay for her brother’s debts. It didn’t help that he has conned Boyfriend from Kobe into coughing up 3 million yen for a bogus business deal. Risa grabs the kitchen knife and attempts to kill her brother. Failing so, she tries to slit her own throat, but only succeeds in slicing brother’s hand. She runs out and decides to end it all by standing in the way of a train. And this leads us to the struggling scene at the beginning of the episode.

Kengo pulls Risa to safety. “Would you become my family?”

Kengo manages to pull Risa to safety, much to her annoyance. She had wanted to die. Then, as Risa walks away, Kengo asks her how much her debt is. That stopped her. And then, Kengo asks a very strange question. He asks Risa if she could be part of his family. That, I have to say, is the strangest way for someone to propose, no? Risa must have wondered too because she echoed, “family?” “I want to marry you,” he says.

Comments
Why do I like this drama? Because I think the scripting is very tight. There are many parallels and juxtapositions and the moral questions that are asked.
Firstly, I like it that they have managed to start and end the episode at the train tracks, putting the back story in between. That is like tight story-telling.
Then, there is the relationship between Kengo and his sister, and Risa and her brother. Complete opposite. The physical contact between the 2 sets of siblings just feels so different. And of course the concern that Kengo has for his sister is totally different from Risa’s brother, who only sees her as a money tree to exploit.

The other is something I’ve mentioned before, the selling of one’s body. In this case, Risa turns from selling her body in the sex trade, to selling her organ. Okay, maybe this is too soon, since she hasn’t agreed to it yet. The thing is, with both, do you judge her for it? While I’m condoning either of these, I think the writers have made it such that we can sympathise with her, as well with Kengo, for their drastic measures. It’s a kind of survival, no?

結婚してほしい。
Without hesitation, my answer would have been “Yes”. If the person asking is Takenouchi, don’t have to consider, don’t care for what reason. YES!

久しぶりにwatching an interesting japanese drama – 流れ星, starring 竹野内豊.

It’s been a long time since Takenouchi has been the lead of a drama. The last drama I saw him in was BOSS, a role that I personally consider a breakout role. But he wasn’t the lead in that drama.

Frankly, when I heard that his co-star is 上戸彩，I was a little concerned. Although I had been a fan of Ueto’s earlier works, especially her comedic roles, her recent dramas were disappointing, to say the least. Hokaben, Celeb to Binbo Taro and Konkatsu, all uncompleted. Gave up half-way.

But my worries were unfounded. After watching the first episode, I’m hooked. I like the scripting. Takenouchi’s protagonist may be a caring brother, but he is not above breaking the law to save his sister. Ueto’s gangster girl is not beyond redemption. I like the fact that they make you think about some of your moral values. In the remake of Melrose Place, one of the characters prostituted herself to pay for tuition in medical school. Here, Ueto’s Risa is also selling her body, except it’s not the kind that she was engaged in before entering the marriage contract with Takenouchi’s Kengo, but the selling of her body part. Is it wrong for her to obtain money for it? She was going to kill herself anyway? And Kengo’s sister could live with her liver transplanted in her. Is it wrong of Kengo to make the offer? What are your moral values?

Then, there is also the clever justaposition of Kengo’s relationship with her sister Maria, and Risa with hers. She always looks at him a certain way when she sees how concerned he is with her. Perhaps she sees in him the brother she never had. The brother she wished she had. Because her brother is the exact opposite of Kengo. Instead of the concern and protection that Kengo showed Maria, all Risa got was abuses and debts. There was a hint of an incestrous relationship between Risa and her brother, although whether they are indeed biologically related is not estabished at this point.

So, why do I enjoy watching this? Besides getting a chance to oogle at TakenouchiI think he has matured as an actor and person and he is really showing depth and control in his characterisation. He has certainly showed that slow and steady wins the race – and he has outpaced his Beach Boy alum in his recent outings. He may not have been as prolific as his peers after Beach Boys, but he has showed that he has staying power. At least IMHO? The rest, one has disappeared, causing his wife to also disappear after marriage, and the other is still stuck in his old method acting in one dimensional characterisation. It’s no longer cool to act like that. But Takenouchi has shown that he can play suave and he can play tortured. Plus his voice. It is enough to turn one’s legs to jelly(fish).

Well, there’s also the theme song, by one of my favourite music groups, コブクロ, and lots of nice shots of beautiful jellyfishes.
