流れ星 Episode Recaps #3

At the end of Episode 2, Risa looks for Kengo with the marriage form. At the start of Episode 3, we see the both of them going to the municipal office (or wherever they are suppose to go), to complete the whole process to make the marriage official. Outside, Kengo passes the money to Risa as part of his bargain in the contract.

With the money, Risa goes back to her boss and pays back her debts. The boss asks her if sh’se finally decided to act in a film. I’m guessing that it’s some kind of A-film. Risa’s answer is typical Risa. With a half-laugh, she says that she’s playing someone’s wife, to which the boss remarked that she doesn’t have the looks of one.

Risa returns to the Okada house and returns the keys to Kengo’s mom. She announces that she is now “Okada Risa”. The significance of that wasn’t lost on mom. That night, they have dinner at the dining table, quite like a normal family. Mom reminds Risa that she should take care of her body for the transplant, meaning no alcohol. They also talk about some of the things that Risa will have to go through before the surgery, such as the compatibility test and an interview. Mom wonders if Risa is able to portray the image of the wife to the interview committee, to which Risa replies that it’s part of her job to create images. She seems a little surprised that Mom is not aware of her previous job and looks questioningly at Kengo, who avoids the issue by asking for salad dressing. Typical guy.

Meanwhile, Risa’s baddie brother (I think just giving him nicknames is more fun than trying to remember his name), is frantically searching for Risa, his golden goose, or should I say gold-laying goose. He is actually a smart guy, as from just an entrance ticket to the aquarium, he was able to connect the dots and find out the whereabouts of Risa, among other things.

From baddie bro, we switch back to Kengo and Risa. In preparation of the interview, they, together with mom have gone on an excursion. Mom tries her best to put everyone at ease. She even excuses herself so that the two of them could go shopping and for dinner alone. Unfortunately, they ran into the Kawamotos, and had to go for dinner with them. Risa helped Kengo out by telling them that she is a cousin staying at Kengo’s place temporarily. The shock of the evening wasn’t the Kawamotos when they found out that Risa is staying at Kengo’s. It is Risa’s revelation that Kengo had had a fiancée.

Back home, Risa uses the hair dye she has bought when out shopping with Kengo. As she messes up the floor with the dye, Kengo gives her a helping hand. They look like a happy couple with Kengo telling another of his stories, this time about dolphins, while Risa half-listens, half-sleeps.

The next day, at the hospital, all goes well at the interview with Dr Kamiya. But it doesn’t last… baddie brother has found Kengo. He tries to dig some information from Kengo, about his relationship with his sister. Luckily, Kengo is not that easily taken in by him.

Over at the Okada house, it’s food again! Kengo leaves for the hospital, leaving Risa and Okada-mama at home. The two seem to get on pretty well. Either Risa can really appreciate her cooking, or she just has a very good appetite. She’s always asking for seconds. Anyway, she goes into Kengo’s room and chances upon a photo of Kengo with Minako.

At the hospital, Kengo finds Maria at the roof top. They have a chat about meteors and Maria wishes, but no shooting star, for good health for Ryota. Then, Maria asks Kengo what if like Ryota, she needs a transplant? You could just see the look of horror inside Kengo, not knowing how to answer that. But Maria saved him the answer by joking about knowing a curse for the ripper.

Well, Maria need not worry as her brother has planned things well. The results of the compatibility test was positive; Risa can be a donor. However, since this is only episode 3, you know that all is not to be. And sure enough, it wasn’t. On his rounds, Dr Kamiya found out, from Maria, that the person that Kengo was supposed to be engaged to is called Minako. That is serious cause for worry for him

Comments
I like how the character of Ryota acts as a foil to Maria. While not the complete opposite, he helps her to evaluate her own position, her own values. And Ryota is also sort of a teacher for Maria. Everything she needs to know about her illness comes from Ryota. That I think is very clever use of plot device. From looking at all the Ryota goes through, Maria is learning more about her illness, about what her future may hold.

I think Takenouchi outdid himself in this episode. Could really feel his emotions as he sits there, waiting for the verdict from Dr Kamiya, about the results of the compatibility test. The look of relieve was genuine, believable

From the way Risa looks at Kengo in the above scene, you get a feeling that she is envious of the relationship that he has with his sister. It is in direct contrast with hers with baddie brother. Can’t really tell how Risa feels when she saw the photo of Kengo and Minako. Does she have feelings for Kengo? What kind of feelings?
